Fish Passage

Cows crossing a small bridge in a green field with saplings planted in rows.

Improved stream crossings can protect your home or property from flooding, provide stable and safe access, and increases access to upstream habitat for salmon.  We offer planning, permitting, and funding to remove and replace fish passage barriers on private lands. This commonly looks like replacing culverts with bridges at little to no cost to the landowner.

Culverts are Common Fish Passage Barriers

Culverts can become a barrier when there is an excessive drop, a high velocity of water, too shallow of water in the culvert, or the culvert is filled to the point of being unpassable. Salmon rely on fresh water streams to lay their eggs. When ideal upstream locations are blocked by things like culverts, they are limited in where they can spawn and grow.

When a culvert becomes unpassable to salmon, it also can cause flooding on your property. If you have a problematic culvert, reach out to one of our staff. Our staff are trained in assessing fish passage barriers. If a barrier exists you may be eligible for funding to repair or replace your crossing.
